c. 1815 Original Oil on Canvas Painting Depicting Three circa 1797 United States American Flag Frigate Warships
c. 1815 early 19th Century, Oil on Canvas Maritime Painting of Three United States Frigate Warships each proudly flying an American Flag, being of the same vintage and type as the circa 1797 USS United States and the USS Constitution, the first heavy frigates of the American Navy, Framed, Fine.
This painting from the early 19th century measures 23 3/4" wide x 18" tall. It depicts a trio of three-masted wooden-hulled sailing ships around sunset, possibly heavy frigates of the same vintage and type as the USS United States and the USS Constitution, all sporting a single gun deck and flying American Flags. Not signed, no placed or date. The central frigate is resting at anchor with sails furled, while the right and left vessels have their sails out and appear to be moving. Several men are visible on a shore in the foreground, including several sailors, perhaps longshoremen, and a well-dressed gentleman giving them instructions. Some of the workers onshore are handling large fishing nets while others are manning a dinghy, possibly intending to transport the gentleman to the stationary central ship. The painting appears to be relined with a coarse weave canvas long ago, showing no repairs or overpaint, one slight indent right side, and it would brighten nicely enhancing its eye appeal by professional cleaning. Some wear and minor nicks to the frame. Overall, an attractive patriotic and certainly an early historic American Navy theme maritime Oil on Canvas.
Provenance: From the Collection of the late Charles Richard Smith, who was the senior historian and branch chief of the Marine Corps' "History and Museums Division"; to our current consignor.

The frigate USS Constitution and her sister ships were of a new design being larger and heavier armed than most frigates of the period, as they were intended to serve as the then-fledgling U.S. Navy's Capital Ships of War.
The frigate USS Constitution is most noted for her actions during the War of 1812 with the United Kingdom, when she captured numerous British merchantmen and five warships: HMS Guerriere, Java, Pictou, Cyane, and Levant. The capture of Guerriere earned her the nickname "Old Ironsides", adding on the public adoration that had repeatedly saved her from scrapping and currently docked in Boston.
