FRANK BENTON ASHLEY LINTON
Pennsylvania, 1871-1943
Portrait miniature of a young woman in a garden setting. Finely executed hair curls, lace shawl and jewelry. Signed and dated lower right "F.B.A. Linton 1910".
Oval 3" x 2.25" sight. Framed 3.5" x 2.75".
Notes:
Frank Benton Ashley Linton's lineage includes Sir James Linton, who served as president of the Royal Academy in London, a grandfather who was an early Quaker settler in Pennsylvania, and a building contractor father who notably erected Philadelphia's City Hall.
As a teenager Linton studied with Thomas Eakins before moving to Paris at age 19. He quickly earned acclaim as a portraitist and was able to charge upward of $5,000 for one. He painted several well-known American and French businessmen, academics and socialites, exhibited widely, including at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C. and the Paris Salon, and won several awards. His work ranged from miniatures to full-length life-size portraits, though his miniatures are far scarcer. He is said to have had an affinity for painting women, and many of his most notable works are those of society matrons.
Linton had a longtime relationship with classical pianist Samuel Meyers, sharing a house with him in Philadelphia for more than 30 years. Eakins was their frequent guest and captured both men in portraits; sadly, Linton may be better remembered as the subject of a 1904 Eakins portrait rather than for his own body of work. Linton died insolvent and his estate was sold at auction to pay off creditors.Not examined out of frame or under UV light but appears to be in good condition.
