NANDALAL BOSE
India, 1882-1966
Two works: Rural scene with figures and cattle, and a scene depicting figures building a boat with a hut and trees in background. The first with a light pencil sketch of a bird and possible pencil signature or inscription in Bengali verso.
Pen and ink on cards, 3" x 3.5" and 2.5" x 3.5". Unframed.
Provenance:
The artist's grandson, Suraptik Bose, thence by descent to the father of the current owner, a close friend of Suraptik with whom he wrote a book about the artist.
Notes:
Nandalal Bose was a significant figure in modern Indian art, and his work spanned themes from deities and Indian mythology to rural life to historical events. Bose's work is known for synthesizing elements of folk art, Mughal and Pahari miniatures, Ajanta murals, and East Asian ink wash paintings. He was also involved in the Indian independence movement and created the iconic linocut print of Gandhi, "Bapuji", during the Salt Satyagraha. He and his students also illustrated the original manuscript of the Constitution of India.The absence of a condition report does not imply an object is free of defects. SHIPPING: We require prompt payment and removal of your purchases as stated in Paragraph 12 of our Conditions of Sale. Arrangements to pick up or ship your purchases must be made within seven (7) days from the close of the auction. All items must be removed from Eldred's facilities within fourteen (14) days of the close of the auction. All items remaining after fourteen days may be subject to a $5/per item/per day storage fee. No items will be released unless storage fees are paid in full. Items remaining over thirty (30) days from the close of the auction may be sold for the buyer's account minus auction and storage fees.
