Description:
Three Christopher Murphy Jr. (Savannah, 1902-1973) Sketches of New York, Unframed, comprising an unsigned sketch dated 'Oct. 15, 1922' and captioned 'The Times' (10 7/8 in. x 8 1/2 in., toning, minor foxing, wear to edges, two losses in top edge, discoloration along left and bottom edge, stain center of right edge); a small sketch initial signed lower right, captioned 'North on Broadway from 33rd St.' (10 5/8 in. x 7 1/2 in., toning, foxing, tear towards top of left edge, losses to edges, mounting tape on verso along edges), and unsigned sketch captioned 'Times Sq. North' (11 in. x 8 1/2 in., toning, minor foxing spots, wear to edges).
According to the consignor these were purchased in 2005 from Skinner Auctions; original quantity was 27 sketches.
Christopher Murphy Jr. was a notable 20th century Savannah, Georgia artist. Murphy's artistic education started early as both of his parents were respected Savannah artists, and continued with formal training at the Art Students League. His superior technical skills allowed him to work in a variety of mediums and subject matter and he is best known for his city and landscape scenes of his home town Savannah. He was an active member of the Savannah Art Club and taught art classes around town. During his career his work was exhibited at the National Academy of Design, Art Institute of Chicago, New York Watercolor Club, American Watercolor Society, Sesquicentennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Whitney Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Southern Art League. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Morris Museum and the Telfair as well as in various private collections.Measurements: Height: of largest sheet 11 in. x Width: 8 1/2 in.
