Property from the Virginia and John Duncan Collection, Savannah, GA
Description:
Three Christopher Murphy Jr. (Savannah, 1902-1973) Sketches, comprising a 11 in. x 8 1/2 in. graphite sketch of New York street, unsigned, inscribed 'The Heckscher Bldg., fifth Ave from 60th' upper left, and 'Heckscher' lower left (toning, wear to edges, and scattered foxing, two tears upper edge, minor losses lower right corner); a 10 1/4 in. x 6 3/8 in. graphite sketch of a church, unsigned, inscribed on verso 'a Catholic church on Lafayette Ave, Brooklyn' (toning, wear to edges, and scattered foxing, horizontal central crease); and a 11 in. x 8 in. graphite sketch, signed lower right, inscribed 'Standard Oil' lower right, numbered #3 on verso (toning, wear to edges, and scattered foxing, losses lower right edge, small loss upper left, toning along edges, mounting glue/tape residue on edges on verso, small loss and tear top edge), all unframed.
According to the consignor these were purchased in 2005 from Skinner Auctions; original quantity was 27 sketches by Christopher Murphy Jr.
Christopher Murphy Jr. was a notable 20th century Savannah, Georgia artist. Murphy's artistic education started early as both of his parents were respected Savannah artists, and continued with formal training at the Art Students League. His superior technical skills allowed him to work in a variety of mediums and subject matter and he is best known for his city and landscape scenes of his home town Savannah. He was an active member of the Savannah Art Club and taught art classes around town.
During his career his work was exhibited at the National Academy of Design, Art Institute of Chicago, New York Watercolor Club, American Watercolor Society, Sesquicentennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Whitney Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Southern Art League. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Morris Museum and the Telfair as well as in various private collections.Measurements: Height: of largest sheet 11 in. x Width: 8 1/2 in.
