Property from a Private Collection, Savannah, GA
Description:
John James Audubon (American, 1785-1851), White Heron, Havell Ed. 1837, Plate 386, hand-colored aquatint with engraving, from The Birds of America, Havell edition, elephant folio paper watermarked "J.Whatman/Turkey Mill/1837" with gilt metal and fabric surround, in a wood and giltwood frame. Frame size: 39 in. x 51 in. Sheet size: 25 1/8 in. x 37 7/8 in.
John James Audubon is perhaps the best known American ornithologist. Over the course of his career, Audubon was credited with the identification of 25 new species. His major work, the full color The Birds of America, published between 1827 and 1839 and depicting dozens of detailed illustrations of the birds of North America, is largely regarded as one of the most significant works of ornithology. His work was foundational for the National Audubon Society, which was founded in 1905 as an organization dedicated to conservation and the restoration of natural ecosystems.Measurements: Height: of sheet 37 7/8 in. x Width: 25 1/8 in.
Condition:
Good restored condition, some fading, three areas of restoration to paper along top edge, small area lower right edge, and in bottom corners, see photos. Runs in fabric of mat.
