- Lot Description
.62 caliber. 37.5" wedge retained two-stage octagon to round barrel with partial under lug. NSN. Browned finish, brass furniture, hardwood half stock with raised cheek rest and 1.3" wide crescent butt. Single shot percussion altered "smooth rifle" with a drum bolster, an old leaf rear sight, brass post front sight, four piece open work brass patchbox with release in toe, a brass saddle plate and old, brass tipped wooden ramrod that is not full length. Percussion altered lock is unmarked, as is the barrel. The barrel has a hooked breech and the form is similar to the Harpers Ferry Model 1803 barrels of the period and equally heavy, suggesting it may have been a .54-.58 caliber rifle at some point in it's life, although it is now a smoothbore. {ANTIQUE}
Condition
Fair to Good. Bore dark and oxidized with some pitting. Metal with much of an old applied brown finish intact, with moderate thinning and fading. Barrel with scattered oxidation and some minor surface roughness and light pitting here and there. Lock with more moderate pitting. Lock mechanically functional, although there is no half cock position. Lock may be an old, period of use replacement as the fit is imperfect. Wood well worn with a major crack through the counterpane that needs to be stabilized immediately to avoid complete breakage. The crack passes through both sides and part of the lock mortise and the saddle plate essentially holds the gun together. 3"-4" of wood is replaced at the forend tip. Wood with additional bumps, dings and mars. A really attractive early 19th century gun that would be rather nice with a little wood restoration and stabilization.
