Untitled (Virgin Hodegetria)

Visible 10 1/4 in. x 14 1/2 in., framed to 13 11/16 in. x 17 7/8 in.
An acrylic reproduction of the popular Orthodox Christian icon, the Theotokos of Tikhvin. The original is an exemplary Virgin Hodegetria, depicting the Theotokos, or Virgin Mary, leaning and indicating with her open hand towards the Christ Child, while the latter holds a scroll in one hand and offers a gesture of blessing with the other. The style, clothing and placement of the characters "MP ΘY" (Mother of God) and "IC XC" (Jesus Christ) are consistent with the Theotokos of Tikhvin.
