A large collection of medals, ribbons, and badges from G.A.R. national and annual state encampments, including rare examples. Items include:
1. Rare crossed cannons and canteen G.A.R. badge. Two-piece badge. N.p., [1870?]. Overall approx. 1 11/16 x 2 15/16 in. Canteen 1 1/16 x 1 5/16 in.
Suspension features the Washington Capitol dome and crossed cannons with a suspended canteen with the legend "G.A.R. / Washington / D.C."
Very rare. We located no other examples at the time of cataloging. Appears to be early, possibly from the 1870 National Encampment in Washington, D.C.
2. 1883 Womans Relief Corps President badge. Four-piece gold badge. N.p., 1883. Overall approx. 1 7/16 x 5 1/4 in.
Finely engraved to verso: "Presented to Nora Alice Figzgerald by Winfield Scott / W. Ro. C. #290 / January 1926."
3. 1893 Gettysburg New York State Monuments Dedication medal. Two-piece bronze medal. Pin to reverse. [New York?]: N.p., 1893. Overall 1 7/8 x 2 7/8 in. Disc diam. 1 3/4 in.
Suspension bar reads: "July 1.2.3. / 1863 / Gettysburg Veteran". Medal obverse features the New York State Seal and the legend: "Dedication of State Monuments at Gettysburg July 1.2.3. 1893. / New York Day." Reverse shows the Gettysburg New York State Monument and the legend "1863 / 1893".
4. 1897 Buffalo G.A.R. National Encampment two-piece bronze badge. Overall 1 15/16 x 3 5/8 in.
Suspension bar features a buffalo and the legend "Souvenir." Lower portion features American flags, spread-winged eagles, and star with the legend: "Buffalo / 31st National Encampment."
5. 1900 Chicago G.A.R. National Encampment two-piece bronze badge made of captured cannons. Chicago: B. D. Childs & Co., 1900. Overall 1 13/16 x 2 3/4 in.
Suspension bar reads: "On the Record of our / Years Abra'm Lincoln's Name Appears / Grant and Logan and our Tears / - Illinois - Illinois -" The lower portion reads "Official Souvenir / Chicago Encampment G.A.R. 1900". A notice to the reverse states: "This is to certify that this badge is made from Captured Cannon" with facsimile signature of the G.A.R. Commander-in-Chief.
6. 1900 Grand Rapids 22nd Annual Encampment three-piece bronze badge with red silk ribbon. N.p., 1900. Overall 1 7/8 x 3 1/2 in. Large disc diam. 1 1/2 in.
Suspension bar reads: "Grand Rapids / 1900". Large suspended disc obverse features classic G.A.R. medal and legend: "22d Annual Encampment / Dept of Michigan / June / 7.8.9. / 1900". Reverse features the Michigan Soldier's Home captioned as such and with the legend "Compliments of the Citizens of Grand Rapids."
7. 1900 Utica 34th Annual Encampment, Dept. of New York delegate badge. Three-piece bronze badge with red ribbon. N.p., 1900. Overall 1 5/8 x 4 1/16 in.
Suspension bar reads "GAR / 34th Annual Encampment / Utica, N.Y." Second tier reads "Delegate / 1900". Lower medal features portrait of Department Commander Joseph W. Kay with caption and reverse shows the GAR ccoat of arms surrounded by the legend: "With the Compliments of the Citizens of Utica, N.Y."
8. 1902 36th National Encampment Dept. of Maine badge. Two-piece celluloid badge with two gilt-printed blue and red silk ribbons with gold bullion tassel. Pin to reverse. Newark, New Jersey: Whitehead & Hoag, 1902. Overall 2 1/2 x 8 5/8 in. Disc diam. 1 5/8 in.
Celluloid suspension bar reads: "Dept. of Maine". Celluloid disc reads "36th National Encampment" above a printed GAR badge. Blue ribbon gilt-printed "G.A.R." Red ribbon gilt-printed: "Washington, D.C. / October 6-11 / 1902."
9. 1903 Bear-shaped 37th National Encampment souvenir badge. Cincinnati, Ohio: The Pettibone Bros. Mfg. Co., 1903. Overall 2 x 3 in. Bear approx. 1 13/ 16 x 1 3/4 in.
10. 1908 Ohio 32nd Annual Encampment badge. 2-piece bronze badge with red silk ribbon. Pin to reverse. [Ohio?]: N.p., 1908. Overall 1 1/2 x 3 1/4 in. Disc diam. 1 1/2 in.
Medal obverse features a portrait of Colonel Lorin Andrews in uniform with legend: "Dulce et Decorum est Pro Patria Mori / Col. Lorin Andrews / of Knox County / Ohio's / First Volunteer Soldier." Reverse with monument and legend: "32nd Annual Encampment Dept. of Ohio G.A.R. Mt Vernon. O. / June 14-16. 1898."
Lorin Andrews (1819-1861) was a teacher, education reformer, and president of Kenyon College. When the Civil War started, he resigned his position to raise a company of volunteers and was widely recognized as the first Ohioan to volunteer for the Union. He was appointed colonel of the 4th Ohio Infantry and led his men at the Battle of Rich Mountain. Shortly thereafter, however, he tragically died of typhus while in camp.
11. 1909 43rd Annual Encampment, Dept. of Ohio G.A.R. delegate 2-piece bronze badge. [Ohio?]: N.p., 1909. Overall 1 1/2 x 3 13/16 in. Disc diam. 1 1/2 in.
Suspension bar reads: "Newark / Delegate / June 1909". Medal reads: "43rd Annual Encampment / Dept. of Ohio. G.A.R."
12. 1916 31st Annual Encampment of the Union Veteran Legion. Two-piece bronze badge with tri-color gilt-printed ribbon. N.p., 1916. Overall 2 1/16 x 4 1/2 in.
The suspended medal features the Pennsylvania State Monument at Gettsyburg with the legend "Gettysburg PA".
13. 1925 Ohio Annual Encampment delegate badge. Four-piece bronze badge with tri-color silk ribbon. N.p., 1925. NEEDS DIMENSIONS.
Suspension bar features spread-winged eagle with crossed cannons. Second tier reads "Delegate / GAR / Mt. Vernon. 1925". Third tier features a Buckeye leaf and nut. The final medal depicts the Memorial Buidling in Mt. Vernon, Ohio with caption.
14. Daughters of Union Veterans 2-piece bronze membership badge. Pin to reverse. N.p., n.d. Overall 1 1/4 x 1 3/4 in. Disc diam. 7/8 in.
15. "Chief Kokomo" G.A.R. 2-piece bronze enameled delegate badge. Pin to reverse. N.p., n.d. Overall 1 7/8 x 2 1/8 in. Star approx. 1 x 15/16 in.
