Bank of the State of South Carolina $5 note. Charleston, South Carolina, 1 February 1861. Printed by Wright, Hatch & Edson of New York. Series B, No. 742. With "Dabney, Morgan & Co. vs. The Pres't & Dir's of the Bank of the of the State of So.Ca." stamp to verso.
A rare early Confederate note issued by the Bank of the State of South Carolina shortly after secession. The vignette at center depicts two white military officers gesturing towards an enslaved Black man kneeling at a table. Also includes portraits of South Carolina Revolutionary War Generals Nathaniel Greene and William Moultrie.
