A poignant specialized grouping of 5 period albumen CDVs documenting Union soldiers posed with their wives, sisters or sweethearts [ca. 1861-5]. This lot highlights the personal toll of the conflict, capturing the domestic ties that motivated the men in the ranks. Featuring regional backmarks from Illinois, Ohio, Maine and Vermont, these images offer a geographically diverse look at the wartime family unit.
This lot contains 5 CDVs, including:
1. Soldier with Two Women (Top Left): A rare three-subject study by Carpenter & Co. of Kankakee, Illinois. The soldier is seated centrally, flanked by two women in patterned day dresses, possibly his sisters or wife and sister. This larger group composition is significantly less common than standard couple sittings.
2. Infantryman and Companion (Top Right): A rugged study of a soldier wearing an open shell jacket and a multi-buttoned vest, seated with a woman resting her hand on his shoulder. A pencil notation on the reverse identifies a 12th/20th Corps badge, providing a direct link to the Eastern Theater campaigns.
3. Officer and Wife (Bottom Left): A formal sitting by G.W. Davis of Columbus, Ohio. The officer wears a double-breasted frock coat with shoulder straps, seated in an ornate studio chair beside a woman in a tiered, ruffled skirt.
4. Civil War Couple (Bottom Center): A standing study by Curtis & Crosby of Lewiston, Maine. This portrait captures a soldier in a four-button sack coat holding hands with a woman in a simple, dark day dress, a quintessential "goodbye" or "furlough" image from the Pine Tree State.
5. Veteran and Wife (Bottom Right): A striking portrait by McIntosh & Vose of Northfield, Vermont. The soldier is a veteran corporal, prominently displaying a 19th Corps badge on his breast. A 2-cent blue revenue stamp on the reverse suggests a late-war sitting (1864-5), likely as the soldier prepared for the final campaigns in the Shenandoah or Virginia.
These images document the evolution of wartime fashion and studio conventions. From the elaborate tiered skirts of the Ohio sitting to the simple, functional garments seen in the Maine and Vermont examples, the lot provides a rich survey of 1860s civilian and military dress. The use of physical touch — hands on shoulders or clasped hands — breaks the formal rigidity of period photography, offering a rare glimpse into the emotional interior of the Civil War generation.

Tonal quality remains generally strong, with the Vermont and Ohio sittings showing particularly sharp contrast. Mounts show typical age-related toning.
