Partly printed document completed in manuscript. Signed by the president of the 6th Congressional District's Board of Surgeons, as well as two examining surgeons and the District head. Sherman, Texas, 17 April 1863. 2 pages, 8 1/2 x 5 in. Docketing to verso.
A certificate of disability for John C. Anderson, Company E, 9th Texas. He was found unable to perform military duty and discharged due to the following reason: "Injury Right instep from being run over by artilery [sic] wheel — fracture of metatarsal bones — pieces coming out".
While not much is known about Anderson himself — he was likely born in 1843 and enlisted at 18 in Lamar County — the 9th Texas took part in several important skirmishes. It fought in the Battles of Shiloh, Perryville, Chickamauga, Allatoona and Nashville, as well as played a role in the Atlanta Campaign. By the end of the Civil War, in May 1865, only eight officers and 79 men were left to surrender to the Union.
