  R.L.T. Beale. History of the Ninth Virginia Cavalry. Richmond, Virginia: B.F. Johnson Publishing Company, 1899.

   

  8vo. Recased with original blue cloth of upper board laid down. First Edition. Howes B-274.

   

  PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION BY BEALE to front fly leaf: "To T.W. Jett From Rev. G.W. Beale". Ownership inscription by Jett to front fly leaf: "Thos. W. Jett / Co. C., 9th Va., Cav., C.S.A. 1861-1865".

   

  A comprehensive regimental history of the 9th Virginia Cavalry written by one of its colonels, Richard L.T. Beale (1819-1893). Before the war, he was a Virginia politician and a wealthy landowner. Here, Beale has inscribed the work to a fellow veteran of the 9th, Thomas William Jett (1843-1916) of Northumberland County, Virginia. Jett enlisted as a Private into Company C of the 9th Virginia Cavalry on 25 October 1861 when he was just 18 years old.

   

  The 9th Cavalry became the nucleus of the 1st Battalion, Virginia Cavalry, known as "Lee's Legion." The regiment saw heavy action, participating in First and Second Bull Run (Manassas), Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Brandy Station (where Jett was wounded in the foot), Gettysburg, the Overland Campaign, the Siege of Petersburg, the Valley Campaigns of 1864, and the Appomattox Campaign.

   

  After the war, Jett returned to Northumberland County, where he became a farmer. He married Flora Alice Sutton Haynie on 27 December 1866, and together they had 5 children. Beale returned to his political career, serving in the 45th and 46th Congresses.
