This 3-piece lot explores the concept of the Civil War "pard" — the close-knit partnership between soldiers who shared rations, blankets and the dangers of the front lines. The images range from a highly detailed view of cavalrymen in their distinctive short jackets and high boots to a poignant study of a soldier in uniform alongside a companion in civilian attire, likely a brother or close friend from home.
The "pard" (short for partner) was the most fundamental unit of survival for the Civil War soldier. These sittings were often taken just before a regiment moved to the front, serving as a permanent record of a friendship forged in the camp.
The lot includes the following three CDVs:
1. William W. Lobdell and David Creswell (1st Delaware Cavalry): A full-length study of two identified cavalrymen. The shot features a detailed view of high cavalry boots and sashes, with bold identification on the verso. Both men served with the regiment from its inception, and would survive the War. Identified Delaware soldier images are scarce.
2. Cavalry Pair in Slouch Hats: A standing and seated study of two soldiers. One subject holds a saber while wearing a slouch hat with crossed-saber insignia, offering a gritty, field-ready appearance.
3. Soldier and Civilian Pair (A. B. Tubbs): A seated study of an officer in a frock coat alongside a standing civilian. A rare regional imprint from Seneca County, New York, documenting the link between the front and the home front. "Farmer" was a small village in south Seneca County. A soldier photographed there was almost certainly a local man home on leave or recruiting for the 126th or 148th New York Infantry, which were the primary units serving the southern part of the county. If the former, he may have been present for the regiment's stand during Pickett's Charge.
This is strong grouping of Union "pard" sittings featuring an identified Delaware Cavalry pair and a rare New York regional studio imprint.
The collection is in generally good to excellent condition, featuring strong tonal contrast and sharp detail across the three sittings. The mounts remain structurally sound, showing clear photographer imprints and identifications. Typical minor age-related toning, occasional light foxing, and period-rounded corners are present on various examples.
