An outstanding group of six (6) portraits in one frame of the three Colburn brothers of Loami, Illinois. The beloved sons of early settler Ebenezer Colburn, they perished during a three-month period while confined at Georgia's notorious Andersonville prison. The images included are as follows:
1. Ninth plate half-length studio portrait ambrotype of Gilbert O. Colburn, Company I, 73rd Illinois Infantry. Gilbert is pictured in a dark civilian suit. Gilbert was was captured in the Battle of Chickamauga in September, 1863. He died while confined at Andersonville on July 1, 1864.
2. Ninth plate half-length studio portrait tintype of Thomas B. Colburn, Company G, 16th Illinois Cavalry. An outstanding portrait featuring Thomas in his cavalry uniform, double armed with a heavy revolver and saber. Thomas and his brother William were captured while scouting near Dalton, Georgia, on 22 May 1864 and taken to Andersonville prison. Thomas died there on 19 June.
3. Sixth plate outdoor tintype of William R. Colburn, Company G, 16th Illinois Cavalry. This depicts Colburn mounted on his horse and pointing a revolver off camera. A group of comrades on the ground observe the scene, which appears to have been taken in camp. William and his brother Thomas were captured while scouting near Dalton, Georgia, on 22 May 1864 and taken to Andersonville prison. William died there on August 12,two months after Thomas.
4. Quarter plate half-length studio portrait tintype of Thomas B. Colburn (left) and his cousin Buena Vista Joy (right), Company I, 16th Illinois Cavalry. A compelling portrait of two comrades posed arm-in-arm. Joy would also go on to die at Andersonville after having been taken prisoner at Jonesville, Virginia, in early 1864.
5. Sixth plate half-length studio portrait tintype of Thomas B. Colburn (left) and William R. Colburn (right). Both brothers wear matching Union cavalry uniforms and are double armed with revolvers and swords. This photograph was likely made at the same sitting as photo 2.
6. Sixth plate half-length studio portrait tintype of Buena Vista Joy and two unknown friends. This image features the men in civilian clothing.
All three Colburn brothers rest at the national cemetery in Andersonville (graves 2244, 5597, & 2753). Ebenezer fell into despondency after the deaths of his sons. Broken hearted, he committed suicide in late 1864 according to testimony found in his widow's pension application. All six images were tastefully mounted in a custom memorial frame with matching engraved nameplates. This is a rare opportunity to acquire such a moving and historic piece.
