Collection of 25 albumen CDVs. Various photographers and locations, ca. 1861-5. Several mounts feature photographer's imprints, period ink inscriptions, modern research identifications and canceled US Internal Revenue stamps.
This expansive collection features 25 cartes-de-visite presenting a superb visual cross-section of Union military leadership. The archive includes an impressive array of identified regimental commanders, line officers and cavalrymen, heavily concentrated on regiments from Massachusetts, Maine and Pennsylvania. Most notably, the collection features identified officers who went on to command United States Colored Troops regiments. The reverses of the mounts offer a wealth of information, including period inscriptions, modern research notes and photographer's backmarks.
This 25-piece grouping is heavily anchored by officers who saw significant action across the Eastern Theater and the Gulf. It features a tremendous variety of field and regulation uniforms, corps badges, and fascinating studio backdrops.
Specifically, the lot includes:
1. Bust portrait of Brvt. Brig. Gen. George D. Robinson. A massive highlight of the collection, Robinson served as the colonel of the 97th USCT, commanding the regiment during the Mobile campaign in 1865.
2. Standing portrait of Levi L. Hawes. Originally serving in the 18th Maine Infantry, Hawes was commissioned into the 9th USCT and later the 74th USCT, making this the second rare United States Colored Troops officer in the lot.
3. Seated portrait of Col. George W. B. Tompkins. He commanded the 82nd New York Infantry (2nd Militia) during the heavy fighting at the First Battle of Bull Run.
4. Bust portrait of Col. Oliver P. Gooding, who commanded the 31st Massachusetts Infantry through the grueling Gulf campaigns and earned a brevet promotion to brigadier general.
5. Standing portrait of Col. Thomas E. Chickering, commander of the 3rd Massachusetts Cavalry, which saw extensive service in the Department of the Gulf and the Port Hudson campaign.
6. Standing portrait of Col. Lucius B. Marsh, 47th Massachusetts Infantry.
