Autograph letter signed by Confederate General Henry Heth (1825-1899), to "Officer Commanding United States Forces." Headquarters 3rd Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, [Virginia], 26 March 1865. 1 page, 4to.
A brief but respectful and poignant document, penned by Confederate General Henry Heth to an unidentified Union General. He calls for a brief ceasefire in order to collect the dead. The document was almost certainly penned after the Battle of Fort Stedman (alt. Battle of Hare's Hill), which had been fought the day before on 25 March 1865, and was the final serious attempt by Confederate troops to break the Siege of Petersburg.
In full: "I have the honor to request a suspension of hostilities for one hour for the purpose of recovering the dead of my command. The bearer Capt. Heth of my staff is authorized to make the necessary arrangements as to details."
Henry Heth (1824-1899) was a career military officer who aligned himself with the Confederate cause. After a brief stint as Robert E. Lee's quartermaster, he was given command of a brigade in the 3rd Corps under General A.P. Hill. Notably, he is blamed for inadvertently starting the Battle of Gettysburg when he sent part of his Division into the vicinity of the town before the Army was fully prepared. When in view of the 30th Illinois, shots were fired, and the rest, as they say, was history. Despite the blunder, Heth continued to command his division and would actually take command of the 3rd Corps shortly after this letter was written, after the death of General Hill.
