M1832 artillery short sword. [North Carolina]: [Louis Froelich], n.d. Blade 18 1/2 in. Overall 23 7/8 in. long.
Inspired by the French m1816, which in turn drew inspiration from the Roman gladius, the m1832 saw use by both the Union and Confederacy. This variation is known to collectors as the "Kenansville," "Froelich" or "Confederate States Armory" artillery short sword, produced by Bavarian immigrant Louis Froelich per the signature slight, unadorned guard, which, in this case, features a pair of punch marks.
Both the blade and guard exhibit warm, dark patination. There is some rust towards the blade's tip, else it presents little to no wear.
