Quarter plate half-length studio portrait tintype. N.p., circa 1861-1865. Separated full leatherette case.
Portrait of an intimidating Rebel soldier with a massive D-guard Bowie knife displayed across his chest. In case the massive blade was too subtle, he is also armed with a revolver, thrust barrel-down behind his belt. His dark coat, trimmed with black piping across the chest, suggests a possible association with a Deep South state such as Mississippi.
Due to the tonality and detail, this tintype is likely a second generation image produced during the Civil War era. These studio duplicates were often created as memorials after a person's death, which adds compelling context to this portrait.
