- Lot Description
Double-edged spearpoint blade with median ridge, riveted wooden shaft. Stamped "CSA" beneath 11 stars to ricasso. Blade 12 in., overall 95 in.
Pikes stamped with "CSA" to the ricasso are thought to be manufactured in Richmond, Virginia, possibly by Boyle & Gamble.
Cheap and quick to produce, pikes were manufactured across the South as a way to crudely arm recruits when firearms were in short supply. Pikes and lances were rarely used among Federal regiments, as they were only effective in a charge and were generally cumbersome in rough and forested terrain.
