Sixth plate half-length studio portrait ambrotype. [Texas], circa 1861-1865. Full leatherette case with "double diamond" motif brass mat.
Originally discovered in Texas, this portrait features a bearded Rebel, double armed with a large-framed revolver in his belt and his hand on a cavalry saber, insinuating that he likely served in a mounted unit. Clad in a thick wool jacket, white shirt, and small tie, he may have just signed up to ride with the Confederacy.
Of additional interest is the "double diamond" embossed brass mat that surrounds the image, a design used almost exclusively in southern photography during the early years of the Civil War. This is an image rich with research potential, particularly for those who focus on Texas history.
