Half-length seated studio portrait albumen CDV. Photographer unidentified, [circa 1863-1864]. Period ink inscription to mount verso reads: "Richard Crandall." Modern pencil notations to mount verso read: "MAJOR 6TH VERMONT / DOW JUNE 7, 1864."
This stunning seated portrait captures Major Richard Crandall of the 6th Vermont Volunteer Infantry. Crandall presents a somber, commanding presence, wearing a military cape draped elegantly over his double-breasted officer's frock coat. Resting in his hands is his forage cap, prominently displaying the Greek cross badge of the legendary Sixth Army Corps. The image is beautifully composed with excellent clarity, providing a textbook view of an officer in the field.
Major Richard Crandall served with the 6th Vermont Infantry, a regiment belonging to the illustrious First Vermont Brigade. Known simply as the Old Brigade, this unit was arguably the hardest-fighting brigade in the Sixth Corps, earning a fearsome reputation for its tenacity while suffering staggering casualties throughout the conflict. Crandall's service came to a tragic end during General Ulysses S. Grant's grueling Overland Campaign. Amidst the relentless trench warfare and horrific slaughter at the Battle of Cold Harbor, Crandall was severely wounded, ultimately dying from his injuries on June 7, 1864. Portraits of identified field-grade officers from the storied Vermont Brigade who gave their lives in battle are exceptionally rare and highly coveted. This is an historic, high grade CDV that would have a place in any Civil War photography collection.

The image is in very good condition. The albumen surface exhibits a rich tonality with excellent contrast. At some point the mount was trimmed along the vertical edge to better fit it into a CDV album.
