Union dark blue wool mounted jacket, pattern 1858-1872. Stenciled number "X 2" and "R & W / Nov. 3 64" to jacket lining. Two size dots and "15" stamped nearly upside down.
Single-breasted, dark blue wool cloth. Machine-sewn 5/16 in. wide twill tape. Standing collar, once trimmed in worsted tape with usual two blind buttonholes, all trim removed. Functional cuffs timmed with same worsted tape. Interior burlap lining. Interior pocket opening vertically. Sleeves lined in heavy cotton muslin. Twelve U.S. enlisted buttons with various backmarks. Hand-done buttonholes.
A Federal mounted jacket bearing the expected characteristics. "R & W" almost certainly stands for Rockhill & Wilson of Philadelphia who received two contracts in February and November 1864 for a total of 33,000 cavalry jackets. As they received no other contracts, this was almost certainly outfitted a cavalryman, though the trim was removed at an unknown date.
