Amnesty Oath. Manuscript document. N.p., 15 September - 7 October 1865. 1 page, folio bifolium, 8 x 12 1/2 in.
A remarkable list of 28 people who took the Amnesty Oath between 15 September and 7 October 1865.
Each has their name and residence listed, with most from Walton County and Santa Rosa County, Florida, both in the Western panhandle, and three men from Conecuh County, Alabama.
Several can be identified to Alabama and Florida regiments: Frank Alford, Co. H, 34th Alabama Infantry; S.Riley Cobb, Co.D, 3rd Battalion Florida Cavalry & Co. F, 15th CSA Cavalry; S.S. Howell, Co. E, 53rd Alabama Partisan Rangers Cavalry; James R. Howell, Co. A, 38th Alabama Infantry; James L. Lambert, Co. A, 6th Florida Infantry; R.R. Sheppard, Co. I, 1st Florida Infantry; James H. Barnhill, Co. G, 1st CSA Cavalry; and Harris Howard, Co. H, 18th Alabama Infantry.
Such lists of amnesty takers are scarce. This document invites further research with many opportunities for discovery.
