Printed Democratic ticket for the 1864 presidential election. Montgomery County, Ohio: N.p., 1864. With lithographed portrait of George B. McClellan. Approx. 2 3/4 x 9 1/2 in.
A ticket from Montgomery County, Ohio, for the presidential election occurring on 8 November 1864. It promotes the Democratic nominees Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan for president and George H. Pendleton for vice president. It also lists the following names as electors "of President & Vice President of the United States": Charles Reemelin, Thomas W. Bartley, John L. Vattier, John Schiff, William J. Gilmore, Luther Smith, Charles N. Lamison, William B. Telfair, William H. Creighton, Judson A. Beebe, Edward S. Stowe, James G. Haly, Henry C. Moore, James Emmitt, Charles H. Johnston, Neal Power, Robert A. Constable, Oliver J. Swaney, Charles M. Aten, David R. Paige and Simeon L. Hunt.
McClellan, from New Jersey, ran with Ohio U.S. Representative Pendleton, a known peace advocate, and secured the Democratic nomination despite internally conflicting beliefs. While McClellan supported continuation of the war and restoration of the Union, he did not advocate for the abolition of slavery, which the Democratic Party's leader did. He was forced to repudiate his platform, and it was this mixed with a lack of support from the Southern Democrats plus a united Republican Party and military success by the Union that led to Abraham Lincoln securing his second term as president.
