Collection of six (6) studio portrait albumen CDVs. Various locations: including Fetter (Peru), W. Evernden (Lafayette), Bogardus, A. B. Hutchings (New York), and an elegant printed oval graphic border variant, [ca. 1861-5]. Pencil identifications to mount versos and rectos read: "Isaac Hart Capt 20th Indiana VQM," "Edwin B. Weist," and "William Quigley."
The 20th Indiana was one of the most storied and hard-fighting regiments in the Army of the Potomac. It was one of several units to catch Rick Carlile's eye while he was building his legendary collection, likely due to its staggering combat record. Recruited primarily from the northern counties of Indiana, the regiment served in nearly every major engagement in the Eastern Theater, from the Peninsula Campaign to the final surrenders at Appomattox. This lot offers a remarkable look at the enlisted men and junior officers who formed the backbone of the regiment.
The lot includes the following six CDVs:
1. Edwin B. Weist: A vignetted bust study by Fetter in Peru, Indiana. Weist is identified on the recto and verso. His sitting in a local Indiana studio captures the "hometown" volunteer before the regiment's departure for the seat of war.
2. William Quigley: A vignetted bust study by A. B. Hutchings in New York. Quigley is identified on the verso, with the poignant addition of the word "Mother" in period pencil. This suggests this was a likeness sent home to his family during the war, potentially while Quigley was in New York City to help quell the Draft Riots.
3. 20th Indiana Soldier: A vignetted bust study by Bogardus. Posed in a four-button fatigue blouse, this image represents the transition of the Indiana volunteers through the transit hubs of New York.
4. Enlisted Man in Oval Frame: A seated study of a soldier in a four-button blouse with his hand on his belt, identified to the 20th Indiana through the archival grouping.
5. Soldier by W. Evernden: A vignetted bust study produced in Lafayette, Indiana, a major recruiting center for the regiment.
6. Captain Isaac Hart: A striking bust portrait housed within an ornate printed oval border frame. Hart is depicted with a full beard and a slouch hat adorned with an officer's feather plume, wearing a double-breasted frock coat. The reverse bears a clear period pencil identification: "Issac Hart / Capt 20th Indiana / VQM," denoting his vital logistical service as the regiment's Volunteer Quartermaster, a role of immense responsibility during the unit's grueling field campaigns.
This grouping provides a rare opportunity for a regimental study of the 20th Indiana's rank and file, many of whom faced the intense combat of the Wheatfield and the Wilderness. Additional identifications of currently unknown soldiers in this lot are possible.

The images are in generally good condition, featuring strong tonal contrast across the subjects. Several mounts exhibit light surface wear, minor foxing or toning consistent with age and period handling.
