• Lot Description

  Green and black trim painted wood trunk. N.p., 1863. 31 x 19.5 x 14.5 in. Stenciled inscription painted to front exterior: “J.M Ellis / Capt. & C.S / U.S. Vol”. Leather handles are broken off.

   

  A fine identified military trunk with inscription and rank of its owner, Captain J.M. Ellis (1834-1907), who served as captain and Commissary of Subsistence during the Civil War. After enlisting in 1861 as a second lieutenant in Company B of the 2nd Massachusetts Infantry, he was quickly promoted to captain of the U.S. Volunteers Commissary Department. Captain Ellis was then promoted to lieutenant colonel and Chief Commissary of Subsistence for the 23rd Corps in 1863. He resigned from military service in September 1864.
