Vignetted studio bust portrait albumen CDV. Cleveland: W. C. North, [ca. 1861-3]. Photographer’s imprint to mount recto. Pencil research notations to mount verso read: "Orrin J. Crane / Lt. Col. 7 Ohio / Born Troy, NY 1828 / Killed in Battle / at Ringgold, GA. / Nov. 27, 1863."
This sharp and poignant CDV captures Lt. Col. Orrin J. Crane, a celebrated officer of the 7th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, known affectionately as the "Rooster Regiment." The portrait was taken by W. C. North of Cleveland, the city where Crane worked as a ship carpenter before the outbreak of the war. Crane is shown in his officer's frock coat, with clear detail in his shoulder straps and a resolute expression that mirrors his reputation for fearless leadership in the field. Pinned to his coat is a silver "rooster" badge, the unique symbol of the regiment.
Crane's military record is a survey of the most grueling campaigns of the Eastern and Western theaters. He led his men through the horrors of Cedar Mountain, Antietam and Chancellorsville before the regiment was transferred west to help break the Siege of Chattanooga. His career reached its tragic zenith on 27 November 1863 at the Battle of Ringgold Gap. While leading a charge against Confederate positions on Taylor’s Ridge, Crane was struck in the head and killed instantly. His death, alongside several other officers of the 7th Ohio in that single engagement, decimated the regiment's leadership and left a profound void in the Cleveland community.

The image is in generally excellent condition, featuring strong tonal contrast and sharp detail across Crane’s features and uniform. The mount remains structurally sound with clean edges and a clear photographer’s imprint on the recto. The verso features extensive, legible pencil research notations documenting Crane's life and death, with only typical minor age-related toning.
