- Lot Description
m1860 Colt Army revolver owned by Pvt. Samuel A. Stoner, Co. K, 12th Virginia Cavalry.
Serial no. 73187 [military frame]. Serial no. 148475 [trigger, grip, and barrel]. Wedge is a modern replacement. Front sight is a period alteration. .36 caliber. Barrel marked in a single line: “-ADDRESS COL. SAML. COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-.” Serial no. 148745. "S. Stoner" engraved on butt.
Born on 27 February 1824 in Virginia, Samuel A. Stoner enlisted as a private in the Confederate Army and was mustered into Co. K of the 12th Virginia Cavalry. The 12th Virginia Cavalry Regiment was organized at Conrad’s Store, Virginia in June 1862, and was assigned to the Cavalry Brigade, Army of the Valley District. The regiment engaged in the Bristoe Campaign, the Overland Campaign, the Siege of Petersburg, the Valley Campaigns of 1864, the Appomattox Campaign, and the Battle of Five Forks. The 12th Virginia Cavalry disbanded in mid-April 1865. Stoner survived the war, dying on 17 March 1895 in Sedgwick County, Kansas.
The grips and bottom of the butt show handling marks and scratches. Heavy wear on front left side indicates holster wear. This revolver is possibly a captured Colt that was reassembled by Confederates.
