A striking image of J.E.B. Stuart's memorial bust at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia. The following words are engraved onto the bust: "STUART / DEAD, YET ALIVE / MORTAL, YET IMMORTAL".
James Ewell Brown Stuart (1833-1864) began his military career at an early age — he attended West Point in 1850, where Robert E. Lee was superintendent and became a family friend by 1852. After graduating in 1854, he participated in squashing the Bleeding Kansas conflicts and helped capture John Brown before resigning from the U.S. Army to join the Confederacy in 1861.
Robert E. Lee assigned Stuart to Stonewall Jackson's command, where Jackson made Stuart commander of all cavalry components of the Army of the Shenandoah. Stuart later commanded the cavalry brigades of the Army of Northern Virginia, where he successfully circumvented Union forces twice, capturing prisoners in some instances and seizing horses and supplies in others.
However, in 1863, Stuart's ego got the best of him. The first instance was at Brandy Station, when Stuart and his men were surprised by Union forces and had to retreat, essentially ending the battle in a draw. The second, and far more significant, instance was during Gettysburg, where Stuart tried catching Union forces off-guard and instead had to veer far off course to avoid being attacked, resulting in his brigades arriving late to the actual Battle of Gettysburg. It's reported that Lee, normally a friend to Stuart, was cold when the latter finally arrived.
Stuart continued to lead and fight in the Civil War, albeit with less free reign than previously. It was during the Battle of Yellow Tavern that he was shot in the abdomen, with the bullet exiting just an inch away from his spine. This fatal wound resulted in his death the following day.
