Vignetted studio bust portrait albumen CDV. Unidentified photographer, [circa 1864]. Period ink signature to mount verso reads: "L. G. Estes / A.A.G." Research and biographical notations to mount verso.
This vignetted study captures Llewellyn G. Estes, a legendary figure of the Union cavalry service. Posed in his officer's jacket, the portrait shows the sharp features and determined gaze of a man who rose from the rank of private to brevet brigadier general. The reverse is highly desirable, featuring a bold, flourishing signature identifying him as "L. G. Estes, A.A.G." (assistant adjutant general), alongside comprehensive notes regarding his service with the 1st Maine Cavalry and his role in Kilpatrick's Cavalry Division.
Estes earned the Medal of Honor for his "extraordinary heroism" during the Atlanta Campaign on 30 August 1864 at Flint River, Georgia. While serving as an officer on the staff of Gen. Judson Kilpatrick, Estes observed a Union regiment faltering during a critical charge. Without hesitation, he placed himself at the head of the troops, rallied the line under a galling fire and personally led the successful assault that drove the Confederates from their position. His leadership was cited as the turning point that secured the river crossing for the Union cavalry.
Following his heroism in Georgia, Estes continued to serve as a vital staff officer for Kilpatrick through the Carolinas Campaign, eventually receiving the brevet rank of brigadier general for his meritorious service during the war. He was present for the final surrenders of the Confederate forces in the West, marking the end of a combat career that spanned nearly the entire conflict.

The image is in generally good to excellent condition, featuring strong tonal contrast and sharp detail in the subject's face and uniform. The albumen surface exhibits typical light, atmospheric foxing and minor age-related toning consistent with the period. The mount remains structurally sound with period-clipped corners. The verso is exceptionally clean, with the bold ink signature front and center.
