GEORGE B. MATTHEWS (American, early 20th c.) — Lee and His Generals
Hand-colored lithograph, copyright 1907, printed title and key identifying the assembled Confederate commanders along the lower margin; signed in ink “Geo. B. Matthews” at lower right. Period mat and frame (not examined out of frame). 28 1/4 x 16 3/4 in. frame, matted to 23 5/8 x 13 in.
Matthews’s widely admired commemorative composition presents Robert E. Lee in full dress surrounded by his principal lieutenants—Jackson, Longstreet, Stuart, A. P. Hill, Early, Hood, Beauregard, and others—arrayed across the picture plane in a formal group portrait. The sheet is enhanced by careful publisher’s tinting and a printed legend that numbers and names each officer, giving the image the character of both memorial and reference plate. The present example is additionally desirable for bearing the artist’s hand signature, uncommon on this issue.
Early, hand-tinted Confederate memorial prints survive in a range of later reissues; examples dated 1907 and signed by Matthews are scarcer and sought by collectors of Southern iconography and Civil War commemorative art.
George Bagby Matthews (1857–1944) was a Virginia-born American painter best known for Civil War and Southern history subjects, portraits, and landscapes. Born in Tappahannock, he studied in Paris in the early 1880s—reportedly with Carolus-Duran—before opening a studio in Richmond and later settling in Washington, D.C., where he worked for much of his career. Matthews produced painted history scenes and widely circulated commemorative prints such as Lee and His Generals (chromolithograph, 1907), while also maintaining an active portrait practice. In his later years he returned to Virginia; he died in King George County in 1944.
