General George B. McClellan with staff and dignitaries, outdoor group portrait. Mammoth albumen, unmounted. [Minor's Hill, Virginia, photographed March 1862.] 14 13/16 x 9 3/4 in.
General George McClellan in uniform, with his hand holding his slouch hat and the hilt of his sword, stands at the center with the other hand resting on a tree stump. He is surrounded by his gathered staff, from left to right: Lieut. Williams, A.D.C., Surgeon Walters, Gen. George Webb Morell (1815-1883), Lt. Col. Albert Vincent Colburn (1830-1863), Gen. McClellan, Lt. Col. N. B. Switzer, François d'Orléans, Prince de Joinville (1818-1900), and Louis-Philippe-Albert d'Orléans, Comte de Paris (1838-1894).
The image was taken at the start of the Peninsula Campaign. McClellan had traveled to Minor's Hill to visit the headquarters of Brig. General George Webb Morell, a division commander of the V Corps.
Interestingly, the image includes François d'Orléans, Prince de Joinville (1818-1900), and his nephew, Louis-Philippe-Albert d'Orléans, Comte de Paris (1838-1894). They had arrived in the United States at the outbreak of war and were appointed by Lincoln to the staff of McClellan. François would return to Europe in June 1862 over disagreements over the US position towards Mexico. Philippe would later pen History of the Civil War in America, a highly regarded account of the War.
