GROUP OF OBJECTS ASSOCIATED WITH JAMES ROBINSON MCCORMICK, M.D., A MISSOURI PHYSICIAN, UNION ARMY SURGEON, BREVET BRIGADIER GENERAL, AND THREE-TERM DEMOCRATIC CONGRESSMAN
A collection of objects associated with Congressman James Robinson McCormick, M.D., surgeon, soldier, and Democratic Representative from Missouri. McCormick was born in Washington County, Missouri, on 1 August 1824. He graduated from Memphis Medical College in 1849 and, in 1852, settled in Ironton, Missouri, where he established his medical practice. By the opening of the Civil War, he had already entered public life, serving as a delegate to the Missouri State Constitutional Convention in 1861 and as a member of the State Senate in 1862. He resigned his senate seat to enter Union service as a surgeon with the 6th Missouri Infantry, ultimately attaining the rank of brigadier general. After the war, McCormick returned to politics, again serving in the Missouri State Senate in 1866 before resigning the following year to fill a vacancy as a Democratic Representative in the 40th Congress. Re-elected twice, he served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1867 to 1873. He died at Farmington, Missouri, on 19 May 1897.
Provenance: James McCormick Jenson, great-great-grandson of James Robinson McCormick; Black River Antiques; present owner and consignor.
