Printed silk ribbon. [Baltimore, Maryland]: N.p., 14 October 1897.
Featuring a mounted cavalryman under a Confederate battle flag and a Maryland flag with the legend: "4th Annual Reunion / 43d Battalion, Va. Cavalry / Mosby's Men / Baltimore, October 14, 1897." With a separate ribbon sewn to upper edge reading "Committee".
A fine illustrated ribbon from the fourth annual reunion of "Mosby's Men". The Baltimore Sun reported on the history of their reunions: "January 16, 1894, the Mosby men assembled at Alexandria, Va., for the first time since the close of the war" and that the "Eutaw House" was their headquarters for their fourth reunion. (15 October 1897, p. 10). Mosby himself was not present due to "business engagements in his home in San Francisco".
The paper also reported on the day of the event, noting the split loyalties of Maryland during the War: "Any time between the years 1861 and 1865 the announcement that 'Mosby's men are in Baltimore' would have been received with joy and exultation by thousands, while other thousands would have been frightened nearly out of existence and would have proceeded promptly to put their valuables in the most secure place attainable. But the announcement this morning that 'Mosby's men are in town' will elicit only expressions of pleasure and these fearless riders will be welcomed to the Monumental City by every Baltimorean who admires courage and dash." (The Baltimore Sun, 14 October 1897, p. 4).
A great Mosby relic from the veteran era.
