- Lot Description
Sixth plate ambrotype group studio portrait. Full leatherette case. WITH 20th-century manuscript provenance note.
A beautifully composed group portrait of five beardless recruits, each eager face captured in exquisite clarity. Most are still wearing civilian clothes with fashionable neckties. Two of the men at the rear have donned kepis, ready to take on their new role as soldiers.
A vintage note gives tantalizing clues to the identities of the young men. The note reads in full: "Five Confederates from Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. Some are believed to be members of the 'Cox' family. The sixth plate ambrotype comes from the 'Tinsley Cox' estate in Northern Arkansas. he was a prominent attorney there in "Walnut Ridge". The "Cox" family descended from 'Memphis Tenn.' and according to 'Swanee Bennet' director at the 'Arkansas Territorial Restoration,' were prominent there for a long time. This image was on display at the Civil War Historical Museum for many years in 'Little Rock Ark."
A fine portrait evocative of the early war spirit. Civil War photography related to Arkansas is rare.
