An iconic portrait of one of the rangers in Nathan Bedford Forrest's cavalry by Don Troiani (b. 1949), an artist who evocatively captures America's military heritage.
A Confederate first sergeant with his rank emblazoned on his sleeve stands against a moody, grey sky, clutching a saddle with his rifle strapped to his back. Several horses and a distant companion are seen behind him. He looks to an unseen horizon, perhaps pondering the outcome of his next engagement, or the entirety of the war.
A popular image, the work has been reproduced in several books, including A Path Divided: Tennessee's Civil War Heritage Trail (p. 14). A rare opportunity to own the original painting.
