POW LETTER FROM POINT LOOKOUT WITH EXCEPTIONAL CONTENT
Autograph letter signed by Charles Page, 2nd New Hampshire Infantry. Point Lookout, Maryland, 1863. 3 pages, 8vo.
Written by Private Charles Page of the 2nd New Hampshire Infantry, this letter describes the experiences of a prisoner camp at Point Lookout, Maryland. Writing to his wife, Page reflects on the strain of conflict, noting '... I feel at time that I did not care where I was if this miserable war was over.' Though he then reassures her by stating, 'I am quite well.'
Page recounts a disturbance that occurred the previous night among the Confederate prisoners, when several attempted to bribe a Union guard with twenty dollars to allow them to escape. According to his account, 'one of the rebels went up to one of the guard and offered to bribe him to let him and a few others out that they might get away the guard informed the provost marshal of their plan and the Provost to told him to take the money and let them out and he would take care of them after they were out...' Later, five prisoners passed out of the camp after paying twenty dollars before they were subsequently fired upon and recaptured. Two were wounded, including one who 'begged for quarter,' saying he had no arms. Page writes that a Union captain then 'reared up to him and said shoot the D.S. Of a Bitch and with his revolver fired two shots both took effect one in the side and one in the head. He died today of his wounds.' Page then goes on to describe the situation as 'a mean cowardly piece of business from the beginning,' and that since he was not a guard, he was not made aware of the situation until after it had resolved. In pencil post script, Page asks his wife, 'Keep what I have wrote still let it come out some other way...'
