A fine presentation copy of the Civil War history by Confederate veteran Alexander Hunter (1843-1914), who served in the 17th Virginia Infantry and the 4th Virginia Cavalry. He was captured as a POW five times and wounded twice throughout his enlistment. Nevins describes Hunter's history as "highly quoted and highly in demand."
Hunter presented this copy to General Marcus Joseph Wright. The lieutenant colonel of the 154th Tennessee Militia before the war, he and his regiment joined the Confederate Army and he established Fort Wright, Tennessee's first military training camp in the War. He later played several significant roles in the Western Theater, including the Battles of Belmont, Shiloh, Perryville, Chickamauga, and Missionary Ridge.
