This expansive collection of 18 cartes-de-visite serves as a visual census of Dayton, Ohio, during the Civil War era. The lot is composed predominantly of military sittings, featuring a diverse array of Union officers and enlisted men, along with several poignant civilian portraits. Notable military subjects include a first lieutenant in a formal frock coat, several sergeants with clearly visible chevrons and an armed soldier posed with a sash and sword against a scenic landscape backdrop. The collection also includes a fantastic double portrait of a soldier and his wife, as well as several high-quality vignetted bust studies of officers.
The primary historical value of this lot lies in its comprehensive representation of the Dayton photographic trade of the mid-19th century. Rick Carlile, a longtime resident of the city, took a personal interest in documenting the local artisans who captured the faces of his community during the war, including Lous Seebohm, Thomas Cridland and the partnership of James B. Cross and W. K. Young.
This lot contains the following 18 CDVs:
1. First Lieutenant (Seebohm): A formal full-length study of an officer in a frock coat, his forage cap resting on a marble-top studio table.
2. The Veteran Sergeant (Seebohm): A standing study of a non-commissioned officer with prominent chevrons and a veteran stripe, posed beside a classic fluted column.
3. Armed Cavalryman (Seebohm): An exceptional full-length study featuring a soldier with a sash and saber, posed against a scenic landscape backdrop.
4. Bearded Sergeant (Cridland): A full-length portrait of a stern-faced NCO standing beside a heavily carved Dayton studio pedestal.
5. Senior Sergeant (Cridland): A distinguished, grey-bearded sergeant in a frock coat, captured in a formal standing pose.
6. The Seated Officer (Young): A sharp seated study of a bearded officer holding his Model 1850 sword.
7. Young Lieutenant (Cridland): A vignetted bust study of a clean-shaven junior officer, showing crisp shoulder strap detail.
8. The Soldier’s Farewell (Seebohm): A poignant full-length double portrait of a soldier and his wife, a classic departure image.
9. Civilian Portrait (Seebohm): A seated study of a young man in a civilian suit, providing a social contrast to the military sittings.
10. The Bushy-Bearded Officer (Seebohm): A high-contrast vignetted bust study of an officer with an impressive mid-Victorian beard.
11. Officer in Profile (Seebohm): A crisp vignetted bust study of a bearded officer, demonstrating the studio’s mastery of light and shadow.
12. Junior Officer (Young): A vignetted bust portrait of a lieutenant, featuring the distinct vignette fade popular in the late war.
13. Infantryman in Shell Jacket (Cross): A full-length standing study of a young soldier in a short cavalry-style shell jacket.
14. Soldier in Forage Cap (Cridland): A full-length study of a soldier standing beside a velvet chair, his hand tucked into his jacket in a Napoleonic pose.
15. Officer with Handlebar Mustache (Cridland): A vignetted bust study of an officer with a prominent mustache, featuring a blue revenue stamp.
16. The Pensive Officer (Cridland): A striking vignetted bust study of a bearded officer with a deep, focused gaze.
17. Officer with Cape (Seebohm): A full-length study of a senior officer in a long frock coat, holding his forage cap.
18. The Watch-Chain Soldier (Cridland): A full-length study of a young soldier in a sack coat, his watch chain prominently displayed against his vest.
