SCHUYLKILL ARSENAL CIVIL WAR CAVALRY SHELL JACKET
Dark blue wool, trimmed in yellow worsted tape, with standing collar, brass-buttoned front, pointed cuffs, and shaped rear skirts with false pocket welts. Philadelphia: Schuylkill Arsenal, Civil War period. Marked on the the interior “3” and “3A” (this is believed to be a stamp error and should be “SA,” for the Schuylkill Arsenal.
A finely preserved and visually striking Civil War cavalry shell jacket produced at the Schuylkill Arsenal, the great Philadelphia depot whose output helped clothe vast numbers of Union soldiers during the war. Constructed in dark blue wool and trimmed throughout in yellow worsted tape, the branch color of the mounted service, the jacket embodies the crisp, martial elegance associated with Federal cavalry uniform dress. Its short-waisted cut, fitted body, high standing collar, and tailored sleeves give the garment an especially disciplined silhouette, while the bright yellow trim lends it the distinctive visual authority long associated with the Union cavalryman.
Particularly handsome is the treatment of the collar, worked with multiple rows of horizontal tape and secured by small brass buttons, together with the front closure, where a vertical row of gilt-toned buttons runs cleanly down the breast. The cuffs are finished with the expected pointed yellow trim, while the reverse is especially graceful, with sweeping taped seams descending into the skirts and framing false pocket welts above a sharply pointed back.
The Schuylkill Arsenal was among the Union’s most important centers of military clothing manufacture, and garments attributable to it occupy an important place within the surviving material culture of the Civil War.
