An original albumen carte-de-visite portrait depicting Colonel Lewis D. Campbell standing in a full officer's dress uniform, holding a sword and presenting the regimental combat color of his unit. The reverse features a blank mount backdrop bearing a spectacular, dark period ink presentation inscription: "With compliments of / Lewis D. Campbell."
This card features a prominent political and military figure of wartime Ohio, capturing Colonel Lewis Davis Campbell (1811–1882) at the brief pinnacle of his field command. A powerful pre-war Whig and Republican politician, Campbell had served multiple terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he chaired the highly influential Committee on Ways and Means. Following the outbreak of hostilities, he used his extensive political influence to organize and recruit the 69th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in the autumn of 1861, serving as the regiment's first commander.
The portrait showcases Campbell presenting the 69th Ohio's first regimental flag during their early deployment. Under his command, the regiment performed critical protective duty in Tennessee, guarding supply lines near Nashville and Franklin. However, Campbell's military career was cut short by failing health; unable to withstand the physical rigors of active field campaigning, he resigned his commission on 9 August 1862, just prior to the regiment's famously bloody engagements at Stones River and Chickamauga. Following his resignation, Campbell returned to his political career, later serving as the U.S. Minister to Mexico under President Andrew Johnson. This card was personally signed by Campbell as a presentation token for a political or military associate.
Because the 69th Ohio went on to earn a fierce combat record in the Western Theater, original artifacts from its foundational, recruitment-era command are highly desirable by even the most advanced Civil War collectors.

Very good. The albumen print displays good clarity and deep tones, with light, expected age-fading near the margins. The mount shows a minor degree of corner rounding and typical edge toning from period handling.
