A remarkable documentary albumen CDV of a battle-scarred regimental flag. [ca. 1865]. The mount features an elaborate printed credit block identifying the subject as the "Flag of the 124th Reg't N. Y. Vols., Presented by THE LADIES OF ORANGE, MARCH, 1864." It lists an extensive battle honors record and notes the card was "For Sale at Remillard's, 82 Water St., and at the Newburgh Bookstores."
The 124th New York, famously known as the "Orange Blossoms," was one of the most storied units of the Civil War. This specific flag was the second stand of colors carried by the regiment, presented to it in the field in early 1864 after its original colors had been decimated at Gettysburg. As the printed text indicates, this flag was carried through the relentless Overland Campaign and the Siege of Petersburg, seeing action at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor and the final breakthrough at Sailor’s Creek just before the Confederate surrender. The image shows the flag in a nearly skeletal state, a visual testament to the concentrated musketry and shellfire it endured while serving as the regiment’s guiding point in the center of the line.
This is a premier example of a 19th-century "memorial" photograph. During and immediately following the war, images of tattered colors were sold to veterans and their families as symbols of sacrifice and regimental pride. The flag is shown hanging from its staff, complete with its original tassels and cords. The starkness of the studio backdrop emphasizes the shredded remains of the silk, allowing the viewer to count the gaps where bullets and shrapnel tore through the fabric. Unlike a portrait of a soldier, this is a portrait of a collective identity, the physical embodiment of the Orange Blossoms' service during the time of the Union's ultimate triumph.

Strong tonal contrast. The printed mount is exceptionally crisp and well-preserved.
