  Shoddy Songster: New and Popular Songs, a Collection of the Most Popular Songs of the Day, comprising Sentimental, Comic, Negro, Irish, National, Patriotic, Military, Social, Convivial, and Pathetic Songs, Ballads, and Melodies, as sung by The Most Celebrated Opera and Ballad Singers, Negro Minstrels, and Comic Vocalists of the Day. Philadelphia: Simpson & Co. Publishers, 1865. 

   

  8vo. Original orange front wrapper with string binding. Missing back wrapper. 

   

  Includes over 100 songs, many about how the Civil War has wreaked havoc for the Union. Some titles include: “How to close this cruel war,” “Hoist up the Flag,” “I’m going to fight mit Sigel,” “Flag of Our Union Forever,” “Star-spangled Banner,” “Seven Days’ Fight,” “We are for the Union,” “Yankee Volunteer,” “Glorious Old Flag,” “When this cruel war is over,” “We’re marching down to Dixie’s land,” and more. 

   

  Several songs also include their writers or who they were sung by when they were at the height of their popularity. No previous auction records and very few institutional copies. A rare booklet for those looking to build their music collection or for a unique way to view the Civil War.

  Some rips on the front wrapper and spine, back wrapper missing, slight warping on pages’ edges, and light spotting on pages.
