After Junghans (1861-present)
Kangaroo Mystery Clock
Brass, wood
c. 20th century
Overall 11 1/2 x 12 1/2 x 3 5/8 in., pendulum 9 1/2 x 2 1/4, kangaroo 10 x 3 5/8 x 9 3/4 in
A faithful reproduction of the iconic Junghans 8-day kangaroo mystery swinger clock, manufactured c. 1929. A thriving counterfeit market for Junghans mystery clocks emerged in the 1930s, distinguishable from originals by the use of brass instead of spelter, in either case patinated to look like bronze, and the positioning of the time-setting button. In addition to the kangaroo, oft-circulated reproductions include the "elephant," the "elegance," and the "onion boy".
