• Lot Description

  Gen. Custar. [sic]. Half-length seated CDV portrait of George Armstrong Custer as Brvt. Major General. [Washington, D.C.]: [John Goldin & Co.], [May 1865]. Unmarked. Modern pencil inscription to verso. Katz 70. 

   

  Wearing a regulation major general's frock coat and shoulder straps, Custer displayed his cavalier personality with his upturned, wide-brimmed hat. Taken in May 1865 when Custer engaged both John Goldin and Mathew Brady for several portraits. It is likely contemporary with the Grand Review of the Union Armies.
