Indoor group albumen CDV portrait. Chicago: S.M. Fassett's. [1865] Photographer's imprint to mount verso, along with canceled blue three-cent revenue stamp and pencil identification.
A studio view believed to depict the official wedding party at the marriage of Major General Edward M. McCook to Mary Thompson on 21 June 1865, shortly after the close to the Civil War. The officers shown are Brigadier General Eli Long, Brigadier General Eli Huston Murray, and Major General Emory Upton. Mary Thompson is seated at center wearing white. The other women, although unidentified, are thought to be Mary's sister seated to her left and McCook's sister standing to her right.
Edward M. McCook held numerous significant roles throughout his life. He was among the earliest settlers in the Pike's Peak region of Colorado, arriving during the Gold Rush, and served as the delegate from Arapahoe County to the Kansas Territorial Legislature. He accepted the surrender of Confederate forces in Georgia and Florida, and subsequently served as Military Governor of Florida. He was later appointed ambassador to the Hawaiian Islands, played an active role in the creation of the Territory of Colorado, and served as its fifth territorial governor and the second governor after statehood. Both he and his wife were active participants in the Women's Suffrage Movement in the West.
All of the generals in the portrait were at one time connected to the cavalry corps commanded by Major General James Harrison Wilson and are thought to have participated in the capture of Selma, Alabama. Like McCook, the other officers had distinguished careers. Brigadier General Eli Long compiled a notable Civil War record, serving at Murfreesboro, Stone River, Chickamauga, Farmington, Knoxville, Tennessee, Lovejoy's Station, Georgia. He was reportedly wounded five times during the war and later became a successful businessman in Baltimore and New Jersey.
Brigadier General Eli Huston Murray served as a territorial governor of Utah after the war and became known for his persecution of the Mormons. The town of Murray, Utah is named in his honor.
Major General Emory Upton graduated from West Point alongside George Custer. Upton is credited with firing the first shot at the First Battle of Bull Run and participated in many major engagements during the war. He was wounded while commanding troops at the Battle of Spotsylvania and later authored several influential works on infantry tactics.
