Partial document signed by William Patterson (1745-1806), as Governor of New Jersey, and Bowes Reed (1740-1794), as Secretary of State of New Jersey. Trenton, [New Jersey], 25 October 1793. 1 page, 8 1/8 x 5 5/8 in., with large wafered seal.
A portion of a document signed by Founding Father William Patterson (1845-1806) during his tenure as New Jersey's second governor. Additionally signed by Revolutionary War Colonel Bowes Reed. The document is enhanced by a large and attractive original seal of New Jersey.
Orginally from Ireland, Patterson moved to the American colonies at a young age. After graduating from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University), he pursued a legal career and became involved in the nascent American politics. In 1776, he helped to write the Constitution of New Jersey and served as the New Jersey Attorney General from 1776 to 1783. He represented New Jersey at the 1787 Constitutional Convention, and formulated the New Jersey Plan, which proposed an alternative to Madison's Virginia Plan for the structure of the Federal government.
After the ratification of the Constitution, Paterson served in the Senate before resigning his seat to take office as New Jersey's second governor, in which capacity he signed this document. In 1793, he was appointed by George Washington as an associate justice of the Supreme Court, and he would serve until his death in 1806.
The document is also signed by Bowes Reed (1740-1794), who served as an officer in the Revolutionary War and served in many different capacities in the New Jersey government. In 1778, he became the Secretary of State of New Jersey, serving until his death in 1794.
The document is evidently excised from a larger government or legal document. Interestingly, it has been edited and amended in several spots, including the date. In full: "In Testimony whereof the Great Seal of the State is here unto affixed. Witness William Paterson Esquire, Governor, Captain General and Commander in Chief and over the State of New Jersey, and Territories thereunto belonging, Chancellor and Ordinary in the same at Trenton the Twenty fifth day of October in the year of Our Lord one thousand seven hundred & ninety three."
[American Revolutionary War, American Revolution, Founding Fathers, Declaration of Independence, Colonial America, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, James Monroe] [Manuscripts, Documents, Letters, Ephemera, Signatures, Autographs]
VERY RARE. Paterson signed documents are exceedingly scarce.
