Full-length studio albumen CDV. Boston: Geo. S. Tolman (retailer label), [ca. 1862]. Mount verso bears a red "Geo. S. Tolman Fancy Goods Warehouse" label and a pencil collector's inscription: "COL. SAMUEL H. LEONARD / 13TH MASS / WIA GETTYSBURG / 7-1-1863."
Striking full-length portrait of Samuel Hudson Leonard (1825-99), commander of the 13th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. A career militiaman prior to the war, Leonard led the 13th through many of the Army of the Potomac's most grueling campaigns. On 1 July 1863, during the desperate first day of the Battle of Gettysburg, Leonard was at the head of his regiment near Oak Ridge when he was severely wounded in the arm and side. Despite the pain, he attempted to remain on the field until the Union retreat through the town forced his evacuation. His leadership was credited with holding the regiment together under a crushing Confederate numerical advantage.
Leonard is depicted in a double-breasted frock coat with a military overcoat draped over his shoulders as a cape, holding his forage cap in one hand. He wears high private-purchased boots and a distinctive officer's belt. The image, likely taken in Boston before a departure for the front, captures the rugged, bearded likeness of a seasoned field commander. The inclusion of the Tolman "Fancy Goods" label is a quintessential Boston touch, reflecting the wartime market for high-end military portraits and ephemera in that city.
Under Leonard's command, the 13th Massachusetts became a disciplined, hard-hitting unit that saw heavy action from Second Bull Run to the Wilderness. His wound at Gettysburg effectively ended his active field command, yet he remained a revered figure among his men, eventually being brevetted brigadier general.
