Three-quarter length studio albumen CDV. Boston: Allen, 13 Winter St., [ca. 1863]. Photographer’s imprint to mount recto. Verso bears a pencil collector's inscription: "COL GEORGE LINCOLN PRESCOTT 32ND MA / WIA GETTYSBURG 7-2-1863."
Handsome portrait of George Lincoln Prescott (1829-64), commander of the 32nd Massachusetts. A lumber merchant from Concord, Prescott was a devoted citizen-soldier who led his regiment through the most grueling trials of the Army of the Potomac. On 2 July 1863, during the swirling chaos of the Wheatfield at Gettysburg, Prescott was wounded while directing his men against a fierce Confederate onslaught. He survived his injuries to lead the regiment back into the field, only to be mortally wounded a year later while leading a charge at Petersburg in June 1864.
A somber and well-executed Boston studio portrait by E.L. Allen, Prescott is depicted in his colonel’s frock coat, one hand resting on a chair while the other holds his forage cap, which features a V Corps Maltese Cross insignia. The sharp focus and deep tonal quality capture Prescott’s weathered expression — a quintessential look for a field officer who had seen the worst of the war in the East.
A neighbor and friend to Massachusetts royalty such as the Alcotts and Thoreaus, he represented the moral backbone of Concord. His leadership of the 32nd Massachusetts — a regiment that suffered staggering casualties throughout the war — was characterized by a "lead from the front" mentality. His wounding at Gettysburg was a testament to his presence at the point of greatest danger, and his eventual death at Petersburg solidified his status as one of Concord’s most revered fallen sons.

Excellent clarity and contrast; minor corner wear to the mount. A top-shelf identified image of a significant V Corps hero.
